In Celebration of Labor Day, Let’s Remember the Vast Employment Opportunities Energy Infrastructure Offers Pennsylvania

In 2015, Econsult Solutions conducted an economic impact report that on the Mariner East pipeline project that runs throughout Pennsylvania. In 2018, when Mariner East 2 and upgrades to the Marcus Hook Industrial Complex were added, a second economic impact report was conducted to account for these changes. Mariner East performed beyond expectations and helped to employ thousands, provides PA with affordable energy resources, and has generated significant tax revenue. Energy infrastructure plays a major role in PA’s economy and the labor that built this project made it all possible.

Mariner East is estimated to have a total of $9.1 billion economic impact from the construction spending alone and now can support more than 57,000 jobs paying about $2.7 billion total to our local unions dedicated to finishing the project. The construction of ME2 alone supported $45 million in wages for Steamfitters Local 420, the labor union that services the entire state of PA’s gas pipeline distribution.

Additionally, MHIC construction supports 9,500 temporary jobs over its six years of construction, between 360 and 530 jobs each year, and generates $122 million in state taxes.

This Labor Day, as the ME2 project nears completion, let’s celebrate the opportunities that the project brought the Commonwealth’s workers and the long lasting impact that energy infrastructure will have on PA’s economy.
