VIEWPOINT: Too many take energy- and the pipelines that deliver it- for granted
Beaver County Times, July 9, 2021
Through no fault of our own, many of us take the modern daily conveniences for granted as our lives get busier and distractions get louder. Few Pennsylvanians likely woke up this week with thankfulness on their minds for the thousands of engineers, skilled construction workers, and others that have kept our electricity, stovetops, and heat functioning this winter, but we should.
GODSEY: Alternative Pipeline Installation Critical for Environmental Protection

A complete shutdown of the Colonial Pipeline, which supplies refined products from Texas up the East Coast to New York, should have been a wake-up call for the critical need for more pipeline infrastructure. We never think about the process necessary to energize our daily routine–until that routine gets sidetracked.

Pennsylvania has always been an energy powerhouse. The first domestic oil well was drilled in Titusville in 1859. VIEWPOINT: Natural gas: Let’s keep the power on
Washington Observer-Reporter, October 21, 2020
There is no question that natural gas development in Pennsylvania has led to local, state, and national benefits. Second in the level of production in the United States, Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry has produced economic growth at the local and state level through job creation and business development. According to the most recent reports released by the Energy Information Administration, our state is behind only Texas in natural gas production with 6.21 trillion cubic feet of natural gas produced.

Pipelines: Let’s keep our eye on the ball
Patriot News, April 26, 2019
It has almost become a cliché for Pennsylvania’s politicians and business leaders to remark how fortunate we are to have the country’s second largest deposit of natural gas and to express its potential to underpin the economic future of the Commonwealth by providing affordable energy, well-paying jobs, and tax revenues. In 2015, Pennsylvania’s natural gas industry was responsible for $44 billion in economic impact, supported 322,600 jobs and generated $23 billion in wages. Given the abundance of these deposits, the issue now is not how to get these vast resources out of the ground, but how to get them from production sites to consumers.

Report confirms benefits of clean-burning natural gas | PennLive letters
Harrisburg Patriot News, November 29, 2017
A University of Pennsylvania Kleinman Center for Energy Policy report confirmed what the natural gas industry has known for years: Clean-burning natural gas has been a godsend for Pennsylvania energy consumers. The report found that natural gas over the past decade has allowed Pennsylvanians to enjoy significant cost reductions versus the national average. This is a stark change from more than a decade ago, when the state was notorious for having higher energy prices than the rest of the country.
Guest Column: It’s time for Pa. to ‘energize’ its infrastructure
The Delaware County Daily Times, November 29, 2017
Many years ago there was a saying in the Gulf Coast oil patch that went, “let the Yankees freeze to death in the dark.” That saying had everything to do with Gulf coastal states producing oil and gas and shipping it to the northern tier of states and with interstate pipeline laws in effect, at a cheaper price than was available to our utility companies in the producing states. The pipelines were built to get the much-needed product to those areas that were in need but without the resource. But that has changed.

Marcellus Natural Gas Lowers Bills for all Americans
Forbes, November 12, 2017
I’ve already shown here how more natural gas usage thanks to the Marcellus shale play centered in Pennsylvania (where 80% of the play’s production takes place) has slashed the state’s CO2 emissions by 30%, but in this post I want to bring in some other key benefits provided, namely lower cost energy. The Marcellus is the foundation of lowered energy and electricity prices for families and businesses across the entire country. The Marcellus is the heart of why our gas natural gas prices aren’t expected to come anywhere close to the high prices that we saw pre-shale days, as I document here.
Guest Editorial: Stick to the rules in pipeline construction
The Carlisle Sentinel, November 4, 2017
While it is important that communities in Cumberland County and across central Pennsylvania understand the risks, it is also important that they recognize the heightened safety of today’s pipelines because of modern construction practices. Recent construction activities have led to increased focus on the nature of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) and inadvertent returns, which has also caused unnecessary start-and-stop construction activity. It is important that the public understand the risks created by this start-and-stop approach.

Despite claims to the contrary by those with political agendas, projects such as the Mariner East pipeline project will directly benefit Marcus Hook by transporting energy products such as propane, butane, and ethane from the Marcellus and Utica Shale formations in western Pennsylvania to Marcus Hook for processing, storage, and transport to market. Mariner East will create over 30,000 direct and indirect jobs using union local labor through the construction phase and over 300 permanent jobs throughout Pennsylvania once completed.
VIEWPOINT: What to know about the recent Mariner East incidents and horizontal drilling
The Delaware County Daily Times, July 21, 2017
Following reports of an inadvertent release of bentonite clay during the drilling of the Mariner East pipeline, residents, lawmakers, and government regulators could use some perspective on the issue. Release of non-toxic bentonite is nothing alarming, or even unusual, in infrastructure construction – in this case pipelines. One reason bentonite is used is because it is safe and non-toxic so that when there are discharges, there is no long-term impact to the environment.
