Jim Kunz, business manager of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 66, published letter to the editor in the Carlisle Sentinel, highlighting the importance of pipeline safety. Kunz wrote that, Pennsylvania has an incredible opportunity to benefit from the Marcellus and Utica shale regions, but that the safe movement of these energy resources from fields to markets is critical.
In the piece, Kunz also notes that, “Using local trades on pipeline infrastructure ensures that the most qualified, best trained professionals are hired to safely build the pipeline. It also ensures that the pipeline will meet and exceed federal regulation safety requirements.”
Kunz goes on to say that, pipeline projects like Mariner East are built to exceed “federal pipeline safety regulations in utilizing additional integrity management approaches, prudent pump station design, mainline valve placement and actuation, pipeline monitoring, as well as control room procedures, automatic release detection safety systems, and emergency notification protocols.”
